Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Ancillary Texts - Magazine and film poster
my magazine cover uses, develops, and challenges as it uses the most common elements of the
magazine covers are the; title, unique selling point, and the rule of thirds.
The elements of the magazine covers are important as they set the tone for the
magazine and the do this in three individual yet simultaneous ways.
· Unique Selling Point
·
The Title
The title introduces the
magazine to the magazines demographic and invites more people to buy and read
their magazine as well. I think you are able to tell a lot by the magazine’s
title, for example from the title of Empire Magazine we can see that it’s aimed
at a younger demographic because of the font that’s used and the cover photo is
always in front of the title which suggests that the magazine is popular within
it’s target audience. While in my magazine the title reads "Absolute Film" in bold, red writing, so that it stands out and is more appealing. The bold masthead also makes my magazine cover more appealing to all audiences as red is a colour that jumps out at you. I have used the convention of a title on my film poster to show the audience the title of the film and convert the genre over to the audience due to the gory text that I've used
The unique selling point helps
to advertise and promote the magazine. This is shown on the magazine cover of
Total film, which states ‘THE MIND-BLOWING FILM’ this will attract the
magazines readers and attract a new audience as they are obviously talking
about a film that will be or is successful and that phrase “The mind-blowing
film” or a phrase like “World Exclusive” suggests that they have something that
no other magazine has at the time. The unique selling point is always at the
top of the magazine above the title as it should be the first thing you see
when it’s sitting on the shelf and the unique selling point should make the
magazine jump out at you. My magazine cover uses the term "World Exclusive Inside" as a unique selling point to attract the audience and sell the magazine to more people as they will want to hear about the world exclusive as soon as possible. It also tells people that this is the only magazine that includes that particular article and will automatically attract an audience. The title also has a massive impact in the film poster as it introduces the film to the audience and lets them know what they are going to watch.
The Rule of Thirds
The rule of thirds might not sound important but
it is because it splits the magazine apart and makes it easier for the magazine
to digest. this is because the rule of thirds organises the magazine and helps it look presentable to the audience. The rule of thirds also counts for the fonts and the colours used so that the magazine cover doesn't look too busy or complicated. This is something that I have tried to use in my magazine cover. The rule of thirds is also an important factor in the creation of the film poster as it yet again organises the poster and makes it look professional. however, the rule of thirds on the poster is slightly less strict as there are conventions that would interfere with it like the inclusion of a billing block, because without the billing block people wouldn't know who took part in the making of the trailer.
Main Image
Furthermore the main image is a vital part of the magazine and film poster as they show the audience who the main characters/actors are and ultimately attracts the audience to the film. I have used this convention in the way that there is a sole figure on the poster just like on the inception poster. This is because it highlights the main character to the audience.
Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? - Trailer
My trailer for Ripper's replica uses all of the conventions that'll be used in any trailer on the psychological thriller genre.
These conventions include:
- A range of different camera shots and angles
- Music soundtracks
- Titles
- Dialogue
Camera Shots and angles
Due to most trailers consisting of multiple camera angles and shots, I wanted to reduce the amount that I use while still have a broad range. I have also done this I i thought hat it was vital to convert the story of the film through the camera shots and angles as well as in the plot to ensure that the audience understand what's happening. The shots that I have used in my trail include: close up, mid shot, wide shot, and a high angle shot.
Below is a Psychological thriller trailer that uses wide range of shots
Music Soundtrack
I most trailer there is music that creates tension and drama throughout the trailer as a way of enticing people into wanting to come and see the film. I originally wanted to use two separate pieces of music to highlight the contrasting emotions, but then I decided to use one piece of music from V for Vendetta called Evey Reborn. I chose this piece of music because i believer that I tells its own story, one of paranoia and distress, and only enhances the drama of the trailer.
Titles
The titles in my trailer help to explain the story to the audience so that the pot is understandable. The titles do this in a way that they allude more then there is due to the ellipsis's that I use in the trailer for my text. The titles were always something that I was going to add as I felt that they are a vital part of the trailer as they help to tell the story.
Dialogue
the dialogue in my trailer, at first is the main character presenting to the camera as part of his weekly show on the internet entitled Ripper's Replica. The other part of my trailer is a monologue from the main character and acts as a blurb to the audience as it tells the audience whats going on in the tailer without revealing too much
Overall in my film trailer i have used several conventions to create a professional film trailer that relate to the psychological thriller genre.
